Celebrating Service: Joe Earl Jefferson Honored with Richard Huck Legion Spirit Award
On March 16, 2025, Post 42 held an event to celebrate Joe Earl Jefferson as the recipient of the Richard Huck Legion Spirit Award. Named for Commander Richard Huck, the only Post 42 commander to pass away in office in over 100 years, the award honors a member who embodies the American Legion’s spirit and dedication to its four pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehab, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth.
Created by the Evanston American Legion Post 42 Board, the award recognizes a Post member, Sons of the American Legion (SAL), or Legion family member who excels in service. Nominations are submitted in sealed envelopes to the adjutant, reviewed by the commanders committee, and finalized by the board in January. Presented annually in March since 2011 at the Corned Beef Dinner or near St. Patrick’s Day, past recipients include Dan Bogojevich, Richard A. Thompson, Robert Larson, Mike Wojciechowski, Jim Farley, Christine Candelario, and more.
This year’s honoree, Joe Earl Jefferson, was celebrated with heartfelt tributes. Tom Slaughter, a friend and Post supporter, shared a story of Jefferson’s caring nature, ensuring his safety after a night out. Michael Wojciechowski detailed Jefferson’s military career as Chief Warrant Officer 4, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, Army Reserve, and operations like Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Dan Bogojevich praised Jefferson’s “brother from another mother” bond, highlighting his work on Post renovations, membership growth to 115%, and veterans’ closet initiative.
Jefferson’s acceptance speech was humble and emotional. He expressed appreciation for being considered among esteemed recipients, reflected on the Legion’s pillars—especially Americanism—and thanked Post members for their support, noting how their camaraderie makes him better. The evening closed with past recipients joining him, a tribute to Commander Huck’s legacy and Jefferson’s embodiment of Legion ideals.
